Description

Most teachers plan lessons. Fewer design them — in the sense of making deliberate decisions about objective clarity, sequencing logic, cognitive load, and the relationship between what students are asked to do and what they are supposed to learn. The difference between planning and designing shows up in whether a lesson actually produces the learning it aimed for, or just covers the content it was supposed to cover.

This module builds a practical lesson design process grounded in what the research on learning says about how students acquire and retain new knowledge. It’s not a template — it’s a framework that can be applied across subjects, levels, and classroom contexts.

You’ll work with:

  • Learning objective construction: specificity, measurability, and alignment to what the lesson actually teaches
  • Sequencing logic: how to order content and activity for cognitive coherence rather than chronological convenience
  • Load management: identifying and reducing the elements of a lesson that create confusion without adding to understanding

Timeline: +/- 3 hours

Outcome: A lesson design process you can apply consistently — producing classes that are clearer in their purpose, more coherent in their structure, and more likely to produce the learning they set out to achieve.
